D uring Wednesday evening's final presidential debate, as in the first two, John Kerry seemed composed and confident -- if not exactly electric. By the middle of the debate, he was addressing "My Fellow Americans," the way presidents begin speeches, and by the end, he was actually joking about his wife's money -- a display of confidence with lots of zeroes.
But President Bush, as always, was fascinating.
The president was full of strange chuckles and odd little groans and little grins to himself. In three debates, George Bush was part president, part performance artist, someone whose feelings bubble out to the surface before his words do, someone who starts out overexcited and then settles down -- sometimes to the point of losing energy and almost interest -- throughout 90 minutes.
And you can never tell what he's going to say....
